One of the most common treatments for erectile dysfunction is a device called a penis pump. These vacuum devices use suction power to engorge the penis with blood. Once the erection is reached, then a ring is placed around the base of the penis to keep it there for intimacy. Once intimacy has ended, then the ring is simply removed and the penis will return to its flaccid state. 

Treatment Option: Penile Injections

Though the very idea may make you squirm in anticipation of pain, penile injections are a very effective way for some men to achieve an erection. Penile injections use special medications that cause the penis to become engorged with blood. The needle used is very small, and users report very little pain. This type of erectile dysfunction treatment lasts for about an hour per injection.

Treatment Option: A Penile Implant

For men with erectile dysfunction that isn't responsive to penile pumps or injections, a special implant can be surgically placed inside of their penis. Penile implants consist of two hollow plastic tubes installed inside of the penile shaft and a saline solution reservoir in the scrotum. A small tube connects the fluid reservoir with the plastic tubes. 

To achieve an erection, the saline solution reservoir is manually pumped, and the fluid moves from the reservoir into the shaft of the penis. Once an erection has been reached, then the fluid can be clamped off to preserve the erection for intimacy.

Once intimacy has finished, then the fluid clamp is released, the fluid flows back to the reservoir, and the penis becomes limp again. 

Treatment Option: Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Finally, some men have a premature drop in their body's testosterone hormone as they reach middle age. This hormonal drop often causes erectile dysfunction as one of its first symptoms. For these men, testosterone replacement therapy will often resolve their erectile dysfunction issue without any other intervention.
