3 Cancer Treatments And Their Pros And Cons

There are many different types of cancer treatment. They are designed to target and treat many different kinds of cancer. Your doctor will always recommend the best cancer treatment to go with, but it is always your choice regarding whether or not you want to undergo it.

Surgery

Surgery is a more invasive form of cancer treatment. You will be given anesthesia while your surgeon cuts into you to try to remove your tumor. Because of the anesthesia, you won't be able to feel anything; it may feel like deep sleep.

Surgery is used to remove whole tumors or parts of it. This can lessen the symptoms of cancer, or even remove the cancer altogether. Surgery can also be used as a preventative measure. If there is a high chance you will develop cancer, your doctor may want to remove those tissues. For example, some people are more prone to developing breast cancer; having a mastectomy, or removing breast tissues, is a way to prevent it from growing in the first place.

Pros:

  • Cancer can be removed
  • Symptoms weaken
  • Cancer can be prevented
  • No pain during procedure due to anesthesia

Cons:

  • Complications can occur, resulting in loss of an organ
  • Pain during recovery
  • Blood clots
  • Bleeding
  • Invasive

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy utilizes different drugs that target and kill cancer cells. Oftentimes, chemotherapy will be used along with other types of cancer treatment. For example, chemotherapy can stop the growth of a tumor or shrink it before a surgeon goes in to remove this tumor. This makes it easier for the surgeon to get the tumor out. It can also be used on its own.

Pros:

  • Can be used to help other treatments
  • Can stop the growth or shrink the tumor
  • Can kill the cancer cells
  • Non-invasive

Cons:

  • Fatigue
  • Can kill healthy cells
  • Hair loss
  • Nausea

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is a form of cancer treatment that utilizes doses of radiation to target and kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy can cure cancer and/or prevent it from coming back by damaging the DNA of the cancer cells. Just like chemotherapy, this cancer treatment can also be used to shrink a tumor before surgery occurs to remove it. It can also be used after surgery to kill any leftover cancer cells in the body.

Pros:

  • Can be used to help other treatments
  • Can stop the growth or shrink the tumor
  • Helps relieve cancer symptoms
  • Non-invasive

Cons:

  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Nausea
  • Skin irritation
  • Diarrhea
